My journey so far…

I started at Coast in 2010 as a buyer’s co-ordinator on the dresses department, my first role in Buying. Being a BC is the training ground for developing to become a buyer. I was responsible for creating garment orders, monitoring the critical path and maintaining samples. In 2013 I became assistant buyer which was the challenge I had been working towards and moved on to the separates department. Not long after, last year, I was made senior assistant buyer and earlier this year became junior buyer.

A typical day in my shoes…

Lots of meetings, negotiating cost prices with suppliers, approving colours and fabrics, fitting the garments on our model, discussing product to put into work with design and merchandising, range building, comp shopping, analysing and presenting sales and reacting to trade, along with liaising with press to ensure we are getting great coverage.

What I love about working at Coast…

The product! I love seeing the range develop from design concept to garment. Seeing the product hit stores and to come in on a Monday morning and have a great sales reaction is really exciting.

My journey so far…

I started with Coast 11 ½ years ago when I joined the business as a supervisor within our Preston Debenhams concession. I was fortunate enough to work with a manager who focused on training and developing her team. I was given a number of opportunities to take on more responsibility and when the assistant manager vacancy came up 6 months later I was able to progress into this position there! I then took on the concession manager position within Preston when this role came up the following year. I was offered a new role as concession manager of Trafford Selfridges which continued to give me the new experiences I needed to develop constantly; and when the Manchester Arndale Solus position came up a few years after I jumped at this opportunity. During my time at Arndale I was fortunate enough to be taken onto a further management course with the Aurora group which helped me to identify the areas of development I needed to progress further. In 2010, I took on the role as Area Supervisor for the North West, and although at the time a huge step from my current role, I took every day as an opportunity to learn more and worked with some fantastic people who supported my learning to get where I needed to be! In 2013 I was then promoted to regional manager of the North more than doubling my current number of stores, of which 3 are flagships.

A typical day in my shoes…

Is varied!! Every day is different in my job…. One day can be very focused around visual and product, spending time making sure floor layouts are commercial and suited to different markets, windows are showing the right product and we are representing the product to the best of its ability. Listening to staff and customer feedback is vital to my role, establishing what product is loved and also what we are missing out on; there is so much we can learn from our customers. Other days can be focused on people, training and payroll, security, cost management, looking for opportunities to drive trade, building relations with host stores and shopping centres, recruitment…… no two days are ever the same!

What I love about working at Coast…

The people! Never will you work with people who are more passionate and driven than the teams I work with! I feel very fortunate to work within a culture that’s committed to developing and retaining their people; and where everyone’s views are heard.

My journey so far…

I started working at Coast almost 11 years ago as a part time sales assistant at House of Fraser in Northampton. It was my first job in fashion retail and when the opportunity presented itself for the position of manager some months later I applied and was successful! At the time I knew very little around the operations side of running a concession however I knew how to sell and the concession grew by 39% - the biggest growth within the brand in 2006. Coast then opened a new store in Milton Keynes and wanting to further my career I applied for the manager position and again was successful. It's the role I've held for the last 9 years with the exception of taking maternity leave to have my daughter. Over the years I’ve taken on added responsibility including being a network manager, dual site manager, rolling out new business initiatives, recruitment and induction for new mangers, supporting other flagship iconic stores within the estate and deputising for my regional manager.

A typical day in my shoes…

I arrive to the store early with Coffee in hand and check emails and pick ‘ship from store’ orders and then complete the daily planner, health safety and security checks prior to opening. The team talk and floor walk follows, updating any best sellers along the way and then my morning is filled with customer service on the shop floor. I normally take lunch at 1pm after which I action the hourly replen report and check that ‘ship from store’ orders are completed ready for collection. Delivery days are always busier and entail a floor move and window changes. There is a wide variety of routine daily jobs from completing figure sheets, preparing rotas, responding to emails, taking phone calls and supervising and delegating within the team. My main goal is for my store to be productive, driving the company bottom line through effective cost saving management. My day always goes by quickly before preparing banking and paper work for the close of the store or late night handover. My work day generally ends around 6pm with the exception of an end of day figure text message from my team.

What I love about working at Coast…

One of the many aspects I like about Coast is the training opportunities I’ve been given, which have enabled me grow, develop and acquire the knowledge that I use both at work and in my everyday life. I’m fortunate enough to do a job I love, I work with a great team and there's no better feeling than supporting their growth to go on and be successful in there careers. I wear beautiful product every day and am given the opportunity to make women feel beautiful for all events in their lives. Our industry is changing rapidly especially with technology such as digital, mobile and social media, which leads to more opportunities, more challenges and more excitement as well as future sales growth!

My journey so far…

I started Coast as the digital merchandise admin assistant in January 2015. My main duties range from daily admin tasks such as reporting, to liaising with the Host websites and creating a strong relationship with them in order to maximise our brands potential on site. I’ve already increased my knowledge of merchandising and various other departments massively in the short 6 months that I have been here. It is exciting to think what else I am going to learn in the next six months!

A typical day in my shoes…

If it’s a Monday, the morning is pretty busy with everyone doing their reporting for the previous week. I’ll help my assistant merchandiser, Bej to produce reports that are presented in various meetings throughout the day, so there are lots of deadlines to work to. Usually the floor gets together around 2pm for an overview on trade and then later in the day I’ll have a meeting with my team (the digital team). Throughout the week I’ll have daily deadlines from the Hosts to send them product data for them to load, this includes running available stock reports and working with the allocators to see what is ready to go online and I also work closely with our web content assistant to collect the imagery for all styles.

What I love about working at Coast…

The people, the work ethic, being in an industry I love and learning how so many different departments work together to grow the business. My team is full of the best people I have ever worked with/met so coming to work isn’t a chore, and I certainly don’t get the ‘Sunday night blues’! There is so much knowledge on the floor so just being in this environment really motivates you. Coast is all round probably the best place I’ve ever worked!

My journey so far…

I joined Coast in October 2014 and from day one I knew I was going to love my time here; everyone was so welcoming and made me feel like I had been part of the team for a long while. Since joining, my experience and knowledge has grown a lot and I’m still learning new things today. My role has grown in the past 6 months too; I’ve been given more responsibility which I enjoy because I can see my career growing with Coast.

A typical day in my shoes…

My day varies every day; in HR any situation could arise at any moment (which I love). On a Monday we will usually either have a student in for work experience or a new starter who I’ll meet and take through a brand induction. I will work closely with line managers on any vacancies they have in their team, this will include sourcing CV’s and supporting them on 1st stage interviews, this really helped me in my first few months as I got to learn about the different departments and roles. I also support our retail stores with any HR queries they may have, this may be about a new joiner and their holiday entitlements or it could be supporting a Store Manager with managing his/her team.

What I love about working at Coast…

The people and the product! Everyone at Coast is really friendly and willing to help where they can; there is always a positive vibe in head office. Being in an office full of beautiful product is every girls dream, seeing what product is hitting stores that week or seeing what is coming out next season is always so exciting. I love going home and telling my housemate about all the new clothes coming out!!
